Munich Clubs & Info
Webcam:
feratel.com .. muenchen-marienplatz.html
There's numerous English & half English speaking clubs in Munich
After having this page alphabetic for maybe a decade or so, it
was noticeable that Berklix.Org offers something unique, so it was (only then) raised to
first in list:
WHAT MAKES BERKLIX.ORG UNIQUE ?
-
NO MONEY, NOT EVEN TO/ FROM ORGANISERS, No ADS etc !
- Some clubs charge membership
&/or event fees to people,
- Some have heavier German emphasis than you might
prefer, Some are even burdened with German e.V.
membership rules, ... discuss that over a beer
- Some web sites promote pay per entry profit oriented
events (eg internations)
- Some web sites even charge fees to event organisers !
(eg meetup.com
charges group organisers 3 to 5 Euro per month at Aug.
2016) & internations).
(This free event organiser
wonders at the agenda &/or self sacrifice of those
organisers, so desperate to give their time free to
organise events, that they will even Pay commercial web
companies for the "privilege" of working unpaid !
- Probably no one has told those organisers berklix.org is free for both
Organisers & all other event attenders !
- No one pays Berklix.Org Any money !
& No advertising ! & No data harvesting ! No USA
spy service. (No BND, GCHQ or other back door either,
we're too small to qualify
- We just operate in English, to ski, walk, bike, drink, water sport & plan Exit Brexit
strategies etc, Not to learn or teach languages.
-
WEB OR EMAIL ?
- Some social sites are heavily dependent on web
forums:
- More vulnerable to Denial
Of Service (Ransom etc) attacks
- With risk of cracked on line databases.
- Big social sites are often USA based - "Spies Are
US"! - No European data security laws - The NSA will
syphon your USA data.
- Berklix.Org
sends event announcements just by email. No trolls can
post stupid provocative anonymous flame bait.
-
EXPERIENCED ORGANISERS
- Anglo
Bavarian Club = ABC "Started in the early sixties when a
group of businessmen and professionals from Munich and the UK
formed a luncheon club."
- American Chamber Of
Commerce ... Expense
Warning.
A lecture with them: Opinion of others asked: notably
worse value than in a restaurant. Allowed smoking at event
after anti smoking law. Despite Americans & other native
English speaking business partners are used to cleaner air
than polluted locals. Boring: every speaker spoke in German,
(even one native English man), no Chair had the sense to
intervene & balance it 50/50. One German politician
ground on interminably in German, un-moderated, about
American political developments, presumably that he'd learnt
from German TV commentators, (his English was obviously not
good, if it even existed), a boring windbag, The English
language proficiency of many of the Germans in the audience,
including the waiters & waitresses was obviously better
& near all would be better informed by listening direct
to eg CNN &/or CNBC. Would have been even worse for any
fresh arrived American businessman/ woman who wasn't fluent
in German.
- American German Business Club (AGBC) www.agbc.de & www.jambit.com/agbc
- American Association of
University and Professional Women or American and other
English-speaking women graduates of accredited colleges or
universities.
- AIM: "Americans In Munich" Dead URL:
http://groups.msn.com/AmericansinMunich/ so use a search
engine
- Bavarian American
Center - Amerika- Haus They run a lot of interesting
events in both languages, some free, some not, & have a
mail list & library, theatre/lecture/reading rooms
etc
- Bavarian
Ministry For Economic Affairs
-
British Chamber Of
Commerce, Germany
- Has a Munich committee, But crippled web site hides
its URLS.
Expense Warning
- I enquired about a lecture, it got forwarded to an
advertising/ PR agency. They wanted 30 Euros. Unlikely
they might change to free lectures while they use a PR/ad
agency.
- Beer Gardeners
(all year, inside in bad weather, not just summer).
- Ben Lomond Pipers

Operational language German, but interesting anyway for
business people. A caution: Germany has more restrictions/
hurdles/ practices etc than Britain & USA: eg guild
restrictions, wider trade mark laws, manufacturing tax,
religious taxes, opening hour restrictions, max working
hours, you might want to bounce some ideas around with fellow
native English speakers first before committing too far.
- English-Speaking
Union Bavarian Branch
- Gesellschaft Fuer Auslandskunde Not an English speaking
group, as such, but sometimes they get in a native English
speaker.

Caledonians
- Munich Dip-N-Divers Square Dance Club
- Munich
International Ski Club
- munichkangaroos
Australian Rules Football - looks like a Rugby shaped ball
to English eyes.
- Munich Lazy
Motorbikers "This is the international site for all you
lazy bikers in and around Munich who would rather cruise
200Km per day than race 400Km."
- Munich Scottish
Association (Dancing)
- NIM Nicht Raucher
Initiative Muenchen
No they're not English speakers (though some may happen to
be somewhat). So why are they listed ?
If you'r likely a non smoker, & you've noticed that the
Germans are on average worse than Brits & Americans &
Aussies etc: keener to annoy & poison anyone nearby with
their smoke (& you won't be the first to make that
observation ! ) ... You may have thought it necessary to
avoid the much higher ratio of smokers among the natives, but
that needn't stop you socialising with all locals. NIM hate
smoking too, particularly passive smoking forced on others.
They also do outside events EG weekend walking, rather like
the berklix Walk
Group. I can't point at their activities page though, '
cos they've got a bad web site that used to not change URL
title when you click on a new page, & now, changes, but
with meaningless numerics, but if you speak German, & are
a non smoker, NIM are people you might not seek to avoid
meeting, unlike local natives, who's more likely to include
smokers than your average native English speakers.
- Skiers
- ex
toytowngermany_dot_com Not kiddies toys, Mostly boozers/
eating/ party/ anonymous web chat-ers, slow cyclists etc
(though a different group of long distance also there).
For Active events eg Skiing, Walking, Mountains, Cycling,
Day & Multi day trips away etc, better see also Ski & Walk & Beer Gardeners.
- Internations.org
Another web mag with city pages inc chat adverts, no events
before login - much less info than ex
toytowngermany_dot_com, (don't believe the implication of
a .org domain - Think commercial world wide income, they
should be a .com except that name is taken).
Lots of punters new in towns round the world may be happy to
pay, but in Munich membership seemed worthless to this author
& decades long free event organiser, who for basic
membership just received streams of mail promoting high
entrance fee "inc. first drink free" drinking events at
expensive clubs, (payments back to InterNations presumed),
For details of non boozing events, one would have to pay a
monthly fee. A paying event organiser told me I too would
have to Pay to organise sports events for Internations - No
Way !

University Alumni Groups In Munich
Most universities will be too small to have viable Alumni
group in Munich, but here's pointers to some groups one off
events & contacts
- Also see page 118 of New In The City 2004/2005 (Yearly
Magazine).
- Other Groups I don't know formal names of, if they even
have any. But here's some
-
Linguists Stammtisch
They haven't got a web or mail list to point at (so ask
around at beer garden
group, as a few members are common to both. Here's a
quote from their May 2007 venue announcement
What is the Linguists´ Stammtisch?: The group is
open to anyone working in a language-related field -
editors, interpreters, proof readers,
secretary-linguists, teachers, translators etc.
It´s an informal set-up - we meet once a month, on
a different day (Mon-Thurs) each time, and at a different
restaurant. There´s no formal agenda, people simply
come along for the chance to network and talk shop.
Conveners were or maybe still are Ingrid, Alix, others
such as John & Christel may know more
- There's a "Stitch & Bitch" mother's group Steph. S.
goes to/ organises - ask at the Linguists Stammtisch about that.
There's also a bunch of Irish pubs, & used to be an English
Pub, & an Australian pub, maybe others will arise later -
ask about pubs at the Beer
gardeners group ( all year not just summer)..
Other Munich information
-
English Food Shops
- Post Brexit, personally
importing things such as Cheddar cheese from the UK, got
banned by the European Union, after the idiot incompetent
British government made a complete hash of post Brexit
trade & services & reciprocal civil rights etc
negotiations leaving the EU. Leaving us Brits in Europe
with no Cheddar, after The UK had already stolen
voting rights from 750,000 British in the EU, helping
lieing Brexit leaders rig the referendum.

Kultur-Referat (Munich cultural office)
- Tourist Office, Munich, Fremd- Verkehrs- Amt, Muenchen,
Bayern.
- Stabi: Staats-Bibliothek. (by Hugh
Casement)
Die Bayerische Staats-Bibliothek. It's a copyright library
for Bavaria, so receives a copy of every book published in
the Frei-Staat. A high proportion of the many books it buys
are in English or American. It has bound copies of many
periodicals going back to 1830 or so. Not quite on the scale
of the Bibliothèque Nationale (or even the British
Library), but still a most useful library. A reader's ticket
to it or the University Library or the library of the
Technische Universität entitles one to use the other two
as well.
- Deutsches Museum (by Hugh
Casement)
The Deutsches Museum has its own library which is the only
one I know to open on Sundays. Strong on science and
technology, of course, but also not bad for biography. It's a
reference library (non-lending), so its entire stock is
available for consultation, either on the open shelves or at
about 20 minutes' notice from the stack. No charge for using
it, but you'll need some form of identity to get in. If
you're a member of the Deutsches Museum (DM 80 p.a.) you just
show your card, which incidentally also allows self plus two
children to visit the museum any number of times in the year,
so anyone with technology-hungry sons would find it pays for
itself. The Deutsches Museum has a very fine collection of
musical instruments, and gives recitals on Sunday mornings:
no additional charge. Recently re-opened section on Bridges
and Canals
- BBC Podcasts have
a vast range of English language programmes, free download,
mp3 format. Yes its not physically local, does that
matter ? Make a pleasant change from nearly all local TV in
German. (If concrete buildings block satellite TV
access).
- Schools There are a couple of English schools. Use
a search engine & mail me detail.
They probably have notice boards with more info on English
things...
-
Universities etc
- Additional to the universities, there's also
Sprache
Dolmetscher Institut who teach English to a high
level for a several year course. They used to send their
students learning English down the GEA for a beer, as that
has died, they'd be welcome at the beer gardeners (all year,
indoor in winter)
-
The 2 state owned Universities:
- TUM: Technical University of Munich
- LMU: Ludwig Maximillian University. Main building
is at Geschwister Scholl Platz near U-Bahn (subway)
station "Universitaet" (U3/U6).
-
Others
- The University of Maryland Munich Campus used to
exist (maybe still does?).
- There are some private Universities, mainly
business schools. These are often listed in "Munich
Found" magazine. One is maybe "Munich Business
College".
